Desert Research Institute Graduate Research Assistant Jie Xu has received the 2003 Maxey Award in Water Resources Research for her paper regarding the use of a mathematical model for simulating the movement of dissolved material in groundwater through various types of geologic strata. Xu, a Ph. D. student in the University of Nevada, Reno Program of Hydrologic Sciences, received a $1,000 prize for her competitive paper, "Reactive Solute Transport in a Nonstationary, Fractured Porous Medium:
A Dual Porosity Approach."
The award was established in the honor of the late Dr. George B. and Jane C. Maxey. Dr. Maxey was formerly executive director of DRI's Division of Hydrologic Sciences. Competition for the award is based on research papers submitted by students on subjects related to water science and engineering. Applicants must be enrolled in relevant graduate programs on the University of Nevada campuses in Reno or Las Vegas.
