The 13th annual Nevada Medal included a week of busy activities for the 2000 Nevada Medalist, Dr. Harold "Hal" Mooney, the Paul S. Achilles Professor of Environmental Biology at Stanford University. During his visit to Nevada the week of March 26, Mooney attended the Reno and Las Vegas Nevada Medal Dinners; gave lectures at both the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) and the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV); had lunch with DRI, UNR, and UNLV faculty; and dined with Nevada’s Governor and First Lady, Kenny and Dema Guinn, at the Governor’s residence. Mooney was rewarded for his hard work with the Nevada Medal, a 99 per cent pure silver medallion, and a $10,000 prize.

The 2000 Nevada Medal Dinners, co-chaired by the Guinns, had the best attendance in the event’s 13-year history. More than 580 business, community, political, and education leaders joined the festivities in Reno on March 28, and nearly 500 were in attendance in Las Vegas on March 30. Highlights of the dinners included Stephen Wells presenting the DRI President’s Medal to Fred Davis in Reno, and to Lou Emmert in Las Vegas. Overall, the 2000 Nevada Medal Dinners raised more than $120,000 to support DRI and the Institute’s Research Foundation.

The Institute gives special thanks to Governor and Mrs. Guinn for their support of the Nevada Medal events, and to Nevada Bell’s new president, Marsha Lindsey, for Nevada Bell’s long-time sponsorship of the Nevada Medal.

In addition, many thanks go out to the individuals and businesses that supported the 2000 Nevada Medal Dinners.
