In addition to supporting graduate students on funded research projects, DRI has a variety of opportunities made possible by private donations. The fellowships, scholarships, and awards available to Institute-affiliated students, the most recent recipients, and the benefactors who have made these program possible are listed below.

The Aileen and Sulo Maki Hydrology/Hydrogeology Ph.D. Fellowship:
Rina Schumer, Ph.D. student in hydrogeology at UNR. Established by Aileen and Sulo Maki, long-time benefactors of DRI's work in Las Vegas.

The George Burke Maxey Hydrology/Hydrogeology Fellowship:
William D. Howcroft, a Ph.D. student in UNR's hydrologic sciences program at UNR. The endowment was established by Elizabeth West Stout, a paleontologist and trustee emerita of the DRI Research Foundation, in honor of her friend George Maxey.

The Nevada Medal Research Fellowships:
Wooyong Um and Braimah Apambire, both students in UNR's hydrologic sciences graduate program. The fellowships are funded through the proceeds of the Nevada Medal Dinner events.

Former Nevada Lt. Governor
Sue Wagner (Mrs. Peter Wagner)
and Jennifer Barnett, recipient
of the first Peter B. Wagner
Memorial Award for Women in
Atmospheric Sciences Research
Paper Prize.

The Jonathan O. Davis Scholarship in Quaternary Sciences:
Yvonne A. Wood, Ph.D. candidate in soil science at the University of California, Riverside. Family members, colleagues, and friends of Jonathan O. Davis --a prominent geologist, geoarchaeologist, and member of DRI's faculty from 1980 until his untimely death in 1990--established the endowment.

The Colin Warden Memorial Endowment Paper Prize:
Flora Gofa, a graduate research assistant in DRI's Energy and Environmental Engineering Center. The endowment was established by the family and friends of Colin Warden after his death in 1991.

The Maxey Award in Water Resources Research Paper Prize:
David Decker, a graduate student in UNR's hydrologic sciences program. The award was established by DRI's Water Resources Center through the generosity of family, friends, and former students of Dr. George Burke Maxey and his wife, Jane C. Maxey.

The Peter B. Wagner Memorial Award for Women in Atmospheric Sciences Research Paper Prize:
Jennifer Barnett, a Ph,.D. candidate in the Department of Meteorology at the University of Utah. The award was established by the family and friends of Peter Wagner, a scientist in DRI's Atmospheric Sciences Center who was killed in a 1980 plane crash while conducting research. Wagner's wife, Sue, former Lt. Governor of the State of Nevada, is a strong supporter of both women and scientific research.
