Dear Friends:

The DRI Foundation continues to search for new ways to help you produce your best efforts. We solidly support you. In the year since I last formally reported to you, the Foundation identified many new goals, but our basic strategy remains the same: raise both friends and funds for DRI. The two are naturally intertwined, and success in the former augurs well for success in the latter. The following overview highlights both development targets during fiscal year 1996 and some early 1997 accomplishments.

DRI's World Wide Web page offers an accessible overview of the Institute to interested "surfers" across the country and the world. To date, more than 82,000 visits have been made to the DRI site!

The newly formed Public Relations committee, working with strong DRI staff support, made major strides in raising the Institute's profile in both northern and southern Nevada. The committee devised, and financially supported, an outdoor campaign, broader media coverage through a television commercial, and television coverage of an Antarctic classroom project highlighting DRI's K-12 outreach efforts. Virtually unstoppable, the committee plans a Foundation golf tournament in late September.

The new Speakers Bureau reached more than one thousand people throughout Nevada in fiscal year 1996. In fiscal year 1997, faculty and staff appearances at professional groups, service club meetings, trade fairs, and even the Ocean Spray Cranberry Festival, quadrupled that number.

In April 1996, the Nevada Medal Dinner raised $45,000 for graduate fellowships. This year, the two Tenth Anniversary year dinners, raised nearly $95,000 for equipment in the Northern Nevada Science Center. The 1997 Medalist and Nobel Prize winner Dr. F. Sherwood Rowland was also a hit.

For the first time in the history of the Foundation, total fund raising efforts exceeded $500,000 and the Annual Fund crossed the $100,000 mark. There were a number of first-time gifts from foundations and corporations. Overall, the number of donors to the Institute increased by 30 percent. Many new donors and old friends continue to "grow with us."

With your help, we are beginning to supply the time and tools DRI scientists need to study the world's most vital environmental questions. On behalf my fellow Trustees, I thank you for your support.

My time as Chairman ends in September and I could not have loved this opportunity more. I will long remember the friendship and support you graciously extended to me, but it is your "science" that engenders my great affinity for the men and women of DRI. It is your quality and character that mark this Institute for greatness.

10th Anniversary Nevada Medal Program Reaches New Level

The 1997 Nevada Medal included many new first-time activities in the celebration of its 10th anniversary. The medalist, Dr. F. Sherwood Rowland, was the 1995 Nobel Prize winner in chemistry, and the first Nobel Laureate to receive the Nevada Medal. Also for the first time, two dinners were heldone in Reno and one in Las Vegasdoubling the previous year's proceeds and raising nearly $95,000 for equipment in the soon-to-be-built Northern Nevada Science Center.

Nevada Governor Bob Miller and First Lady Sandy Miller increased their long-standing support of the program, serving as statewide co-chairs for the dinners, and offering their personal letterhead for event invitations. Sandy Miller was also surprised and delighted to find that she is the first-ever recipient of the DRI President's Medal for her contributions to the institute and the state's K-12 science and mathematic activities.

Special thanks go out to the Millers, Liz and Mac King for serving as the Reno dinner co-chairs, Nevada Bell for its past decade of support, and all who contributed to the dinners and silent auctions.
